I’m always glad to see Timothy Olyphant on my screen. And if he just happens to be starring in a new series where he plays a badass cowboy, I’m glad-tastic. Olyphant’s character on JUSTIFIED, Raylan Givens, doesn’t like to follow rules. And so was on board with him four minutes into my advance view of JUSTIFIED’s pilot. Because really, who likes rules?

Raylan gets in a bit of steamy sludge at work in Miami, so he’s sent to go work back in his home state of Kentucky. BTW, Raylan’s a U.S. Marshal who wears a cowboy hat, and makes it look cool. The job of a U.S. Marshal is to find fugitives, protect witnesses, and transport prisoners. All sorts of dangerous stuff that some people probably find fun because it lends a thrill to your life. (Or maybe because they want to make the world safe, yea, yea.)

This show is definitely gritty. This is probably why the show starts at 10 pm. But I like that, I like when shows give you something real instead of something sugar-covered.

As you would expect, people from Raylan’s past come out from the woodwork. In the pilot we get some great facetime with Ava, the girl Raylan always had a crush on (and vice-versa). But she’s not an innocent sweetheart.

I’m glad that she is unpredictably kind of a basket case (because of being abused by her husband) and seems almost dangerous. The actress cast as Ava is Joelle Carter, and she fills herself up in this role to the point where you never question that this character isn’t authentic. I…well, I don’t think this is a character just any actress could transform herself into with such believability. And yea, I might actually find the character of Ava a bit more interesting than Raylan, but shhh.
